What Freedom?


We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, tht among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. (Declaration of Independence)

Having been promised liberty, it is reasonable that freedom has some limitations preventing harm to individuals and society. After saying this it follows that wisdom is required to determine what limitations to freedom are reasonable and necessary and which go too far.

Many have condemned regimes abroad that they deemed totalitarian and yet what have we now?  At every turn unwise rules are loaded on the public that complicate their lives rather than enable them.  Consider the new gas cans in use.  Because of radical environmental obsessions, gas containers have been made nearly inoperable.  Some gadget on the spout conspires to prevent the dispensing of the liquid without great frustration, then when it is finally operated the lack of a vent opposite the spout hinders the flow that you were lucky to get in the first place.  Case law created by activist lawsuits also do this.  Recent, a judgment was granted against Breyer's Ice Cream.  The were convicted of putting unnatural chocolate in their Natural Chocolate Ice Cream.  The Dutch chocolate condemned  was processed with an alkali and therefore deemed by radicals to be unnatural.  However it has been a normal food staple since the 19th century. Moreover, the potassium carbonate used for processing had been extracted along with other natural alkalies from wood ashes even to ancient times for use for various purposes, such as to make soap.  Remember also that foie gras was recently banned in California.  This sort of inanity seems characteristic of liberals that want to govern our country.  The inventors of such frustrations believe that common men cannot manage their own affairs.  Rather the government should intervene in every detail of their lives to ensure the proper operation of society as it seems in their own eyes.  To this mindset, your children are not your own, your money is not your own, and you do not even have ultimate right over the minutest aspect of your own affairs, if these want to interfere.  How is this different to the totalitarianism which our society condemns others?  Indeed, it appears to match the dictionary definition of the word if you can look past certain political labels in the definition:

totalitarianism
1 : centralized control by an autocratic authority
2 : the political concept that the citizen should be totally subject to an absolute state authority

Usurious taxation too is an autocratic device.  To a family making $40,000 per year the tax that is Obamacare is at a rate of 35%.  If you added an estimated 15% tax rate already taken for other government programs the subtotal comes up to 50%.  I say subtotal, because there are other taxes and other means to erode the spending power of the average working family. This obscene piece of tyranny is just plain stealing by those who have assumed power to do so.

It is an odd turn that after invoking trifling tyranny that these same people insist on perpetuating freedom to commit society-destroying sins.  Our founding fathers would have never done this knowing that sin is the worst form of slavery.  This in turn reveals the mechanism of this tyranny.  Political rationalizations meant to put the evil of certain policy out of mind does not remove it from the conscience.  Then pressure from a suppressed conscience requires some kind of pseudo-moral activism which in the vacuum of any sort of wisdom drives on an ever deepening tangle of liberal tyranny in the false guise of philanthropy.

Finally, a few wise laws – if Christian morality were allowed as a factor – would save from the course of tyranny that many compensating laws would create as an alternative.
